            I’ve met so many
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           men who feel confident when they can push through,
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            who strive to become the type-A achiever, the unbreakable force who handles everything on his own. To perform, provide, and prove himself—day in and day out. Don’t you think? &amp;#55358;&amp;#56596;
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            But then, what happens
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           when that weight becomes too much?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            What if, instead of feeling strong, a man finds himself just
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           getting through
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            the day? Maybe he wakes up already exhausted, slaps on a confident mask, and heads to work, where he’s mastered the role of the competent achiever. He cracks jokes, meets deadlines effortlessly, and says,

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           “I don’t give a f***”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            attitude. But what sounds strong, can have a fragile core:
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           detachment and numbness aren’t signs of resilience, but of high-functioning freeze
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           —a survival response that can go unnoticed for years. And it can silently steal your sense of aliveness.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Functional freeze is when your nervous system is stuck in a state of shutdown, but you’re still able to go through the motions. You show up, get things done, maintain your relationships—

    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           on the surface, everything seems fine.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            But underneath, there’s a numbness, a sense of going through life on autopilot. You might struggle to feel joy or deep connection. You might escape into screens, alcohol, or work, not because you want to, but because

           true recovery doesn’t just distract you from stress; it restores your capacity to engage with life.

            As children, we instinctively need connection to feel safe. If expressing our needs, emotions, or individuality is met with disapproval, criticism, or even abandonment, we learn to suppress those parts of ourselves to maintain that connection.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

            For example, if a child is scolded for being "too sensitive" or "too much," they may internalize the belief:

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Shame can distort one's relationship with oneself, to the point of feeling completely numb and empty, so far as to feel almost dead inside.

           The antidote to toxic shame isn’t self-criticism—it’s compassion.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;

            NARM emphasizes the

      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

            Name it in an active “self-agency” way:
           &#xD;
      &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
          
             When you feel shame, pause, try to stay present with it (instead of running from it) and name it: "I'm shaming myself right now." This simple act brings awareness and focuses on self-efficacy, allowing for step 2:
            &#xD;
        &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Get Curious:
           &#xD;
      &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
          
             Try asking yourself, "What part of me is my shame protecting? What might I be feeling, if my shame weren’t here?" Often, it’s vulnerability or a deeper unmet longing for connection.
            &#xD;
        &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Share It:
           &#xD;
      &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
          
             Shame thrives in secrecy. Talking about it, at first with a trusted friend, therapist, or support group can diffuse its power. If therapy feels daunting, consider inviting a friend to join you for an initial session. Some therapists even offer trial sessions to find the right fit.
            &#xD;
        &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Reconnect with your body:
           &#xD;
      &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
          
             Shame disconnects us from our physical sensations. Simple practices like deep breathing, stretching, orienting yourself in the room, focusing your eyes on simple, stable objects in near distance while in your head naming them, can gently re-establish this connection.

        &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Find the Right Environment:
           &#xD;
      &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
          
             Retreats and group settings can be incredibly healing. In a safe, supportive environment where everyone is working on themselves, opening up about parts everyone feels ashamed of, shame loses its grip. You realize:

      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            I'm not alone in this

           By doing so, we uncouple our sense of worth from their actions and take important steps towards reclaiming our emotional freedom.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Breaking Free From Shame Together
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Healing shame isn’t a solo journey. It begins with reaching out, daring to share what feels unspeakable. If one therapist or group doesn’t feel like the right fit, don’t give up.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Keep searching until you find a space where you feel seen, heard, and accepted.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           Burnout isn’t just about being tired. It’s a slow unraveling, a deep exhaustion that makes even basic tasks feel impossible. This week’s guest, Ruan—a dear friend of Hearts Wide Open podcast host Dennis—knows this firsthand. Ruan experienced burnout so severe that he couldn’t even finish a sentence. His brain was fried, his body wrecked, and the worst part? He felt completely alone.

            Before anything else, we have to acknowledge that friendship isn’t optional. It’s part of a well-balanced, healthy life. If you’ve been going through life solo,

    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           start small
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           —reach out to an old friend, join a group, or even just make an effort to check in with someone you trust.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Step 2: Choose The Right People
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

            Many men settle in friendships the same way some settle in relationships—out of convenience rather than compatibility. But real friendships aren’t just about who happens to be around; they’re about

    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           who truly gets you
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;

            And don’t be afraid of rejection—building meaningful friendships requires risk. A clean rejection is better than vague uncertainty. If you have to leave parts of yourself behind just to fit in, that’s a red flag. Real friends accept you as you are.

           Show up.

            Join a group, play a sport, start a hobby. Real friendships aren’t built on small talk; they’re built on shared experiences where you truly see each other’s essence.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           And when life gets hard, lean on your people. There’s nothing weak about needing support. Ruan's friends carried him through his worst burnout. That’s what real friendship looks like—it’s not about constant effort or control, but about genuine, unconditional presence.

           Step 4: Prioritizing Social Life

           We often treat friendships as secondary to work, relationships, and personal goals. But in cultures where social life is a priority—think Brazil (where Ruan is from), where people spend hours together at the beach or around a barbecue—mental health is stronger. Compare that to many parts of Europe, where people keep to themselves, overly focused on their own lives. Connection takes some effort and committment, but it’s worth it.

           A healthy man doesn't have to be the center of everything—

      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            He’s part of a community, a world, and a network of relationships that enrich his life. When things get tough, he doesn’t have to go at it alone—he reaches out, because he knows real strength is in connection.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

When he reunited with his mother after years of distance, they shared an intense hug that seemed to dissolve old walls of resentment. In that moment, he stepped further into his power as a man. With his "cup full," he found he could give more freely, without conditions.

  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           2. Handle with Care: Yourself First
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Boundaries are your best friend during family time, as Jakob reminds us. It's not selfish to take breaks, whether that's a walk, a bathroom breather, or even a few minutes to scroll through your phone. If you feel your patience running low, listen to that signal. Shorten your visits if needed, or schedule solo time to reset. Balancing your “exposure time” is an important strategy. This allows you to truly enjoy the time you spend together and also have the necessary space to recover in between.

  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           Develop awareness of your early warning signs Jakob emphasizes. If these signs start appearing more frequently, take a break – time to turn to a self-care move! This way, you can recharge your energy and show up as the person you envisioned yourself to be.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

Each interaction taught us something valuable: public speaking can either become a mask we hide behind or an opportunity to connect more deeply with ourselves and others. To speak our truths, we often had to pause, take a step back, and find the courage to ask: What do I really want to say here? Navigating the pressures of modern life - where strength is still often valued over vulnerability - learning to speak in public offered surprising lessons in resilience, authenticity, and self-compassion.
          &#xD;

            Overpowering the audience:

             Speaking too loudly or forcefully to dominate the room.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;

            Over-preparation as a form of control:
           &#xD;

            Avoiding speaking opportunities:

        &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
          
             Turning down engagements or delegating tasks.
            &#xD;
        &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Rushing through the speech:
           &#xD;

             Speaking too quickly, skipping over sections, or trying to finish as fast as possible to escape the discomfort.

      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Distracting behaviors:

             Over-apologizing, laughing nervously, or making excessive jokes to shift attention away from vulnerability.

            This distinction matters because arrogance, rooted in a fight-or-flight response, blocks connection, isolating both the speaker and the audience. True confidence, on the other hand, arises from a place of self-connection and vulnerability and invites others in. It acknowledges imperfections while staying present. In this way, public speaking becomes less about performance and more about creating a moment of shared meaning.

           What Is Movember?

           Movember is more than just a month; it’s a global movement dedicated to raising awareness and funds for men's health issues and focused on topics like prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. Every November, people around the world raise awareness and funds to support these issues and respective initiatives. An idea that was started in a pub somewhere in Australia over 20 years ago has grown into a global movement. To raise awareness and funds to support men's health, men around the world grow mustaches and engage in movement challenges like running, cycling, or walking to spark conversations, shine a light on these issues, and thereby support impactful initiatives aimed at improving men’s health.

           Who’s writing?

           Hello everyone! &amp;#55357;&amp;#56842; I’m Tamara, an aspiring body-oriented trauma therapist and mental health enthusiast. From a young age, I’ve been captivated by the workings of the human mind and the many facets of people’s "whys." My biggest dream is to normalize mental health care for everyone, making it a routine, as normal as brushing your teeth.
          &#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           In my leisure time, I enjoy running through the woods, exploring new places around the world, and experimenting with various yoga, meditation, and breathwork styles and exercises. I also have a passion for cracking bad puns and engaging in lively conversations with friends over dinner, as well as journaling, ecstatic dancing, and much more!

           At Hearts Wide Open, we believe in improving everyday quality of life through open-mindedness, mental well-being, and community support. For many people, men especially, the idea of expressing feelings openly or sharing vulnerability can feel unfamiliar or even uncomfortable. &amp;#55357;&amp;#56911; But reconnecting with ourselves and having the support to be open is an essential part of a happy, balanced life. Whether learning to make choices that nurture well-being or tackling more complex issues like burnout or people-pleasing, our goal is to spark conversations and create a supportive, sustainable culture and community for men’s mental health.

           Hearts Wide Open was founded by Dennis, a marketer, workshop host, and dog lover, and Soroosh, an AI engineer, runner, and curious mind—two friends in Amsterdam who discovered the relief and empowerment that come from openly discussing mental health with one another. They wondered, “Why isn’t everyone doing this?” and soon after, their men's health podcast was born. Covering topics from self-worth and building your own support system to being your true authentc self, dealing with pressure at work and how physical activity supports your mental health, Hearts Wide Open offers something for everyone.
